I've been building the GABLVM iOS app for a while now, and for weeks I had this annoying thing happening. I'd be in the Learn tab, double tap Play on a dua or a phrase from a lesson, the recording would start fine, and about a second later VoiceOver would just dump me on the Back button. Not every time I touched the app. Just when I started a recording. I'd swipe back down, find my place, keep going. I honestly figured it was my phone doing something weird, so I didn't even write it down.

Update, September 26

Drupal 11.4.8 came out on September 26 with the fix. Drupal core now registers its own escape filter instead of borrowing Twig's, so Twig 3.30 compiles Drupal templates correctly. Our updater installed 11.4.8 on its own at 4:30 PM Central. I then removed the Twig hold, let the updater move the site to Twig 3.30.0, and watched it pass the same test that failed four times the morning before. The site has been on Twig 3.30 since 5:08 PM with no errors.

On June 26, 2026, we shipped an update meant to make the Quran player work better with the JAWS screen reader on Windows. It did. It also, without us noticing, switched off the player's single key keyboard shortcuts for anyone whose focus was on the player's own controls, and they stayed off for seven weeks. Accessibility is the reason this organization exists, so when we get it wrong in the very act of trying to get it right, you deserve the full story. No data was affected and playback itself never stopped working.

Last month we told the story of GABLVM's first eight months: how a website that began as four pages and a promise grew into a full set of accessible Islamic tools, built from the ground up for blind and low-vision Muslims. This is the updated edition of that story, brought current through the middle of July 2026, with everything we have shipped, fixed, and learned since. It is written for everyone: the first half of each section is plain language, and there is a section near the end for readers who want the technical detail.

On the night of July 11, gablvm.org went down and stayed down for twelve hours and forty-one minutes. That is the longest outage in this site's history, and you deserve a straight account of what happened, why our own monitoring took ten hours to notice, and what has already changed so it cannot repeat. No visitor data was ever at risk. This was an availability failure, not a security event.

This week gablvm.org moved to Drupal 11.4, the newest release of the platform the whole site runs on. Nothing changes in how the tools look or work. What you get is a faster site, a stronger foundation, and a clear runway for everything we plan to build next. Here is what is actually in the release, and what it means for you.

What is new under the hood

Drupal 11.4 is mostly an engine-room release, and the engine got dramatically more efficient.

April and early May 2026 brought four major releases to GABLVM. Each was built around the same principle: a person using only a screen reader and a keyboard, or VoiceOver on an iPhone, should get the same depth of experience as someone using a mouse on a high resolution screen. Your bookmarks belong to you, not to a single app. As of April 27, 2026, you can connect your Quran.com account to GABLVM and have the two stay in sync. Bookmark a verse on your phone during morning recitation, and the same bookmark is waiting for you on the GABLVM My Quran Account page that afternoon. Take a note on a verse here, and it appears in the Quran.com app the next time you open it. The same goes for reading streaks and daily reading goals.

The Quran Player on GABLVM is a fully accessible Quran listening experience built around the way blind and low vision users actually navigate audio. Twenty reciters. Optional English audio translation. Full keyboard and screen reader control. Bookmarks that hold their place. It is the centerpiece of our Islamic tools, and it has matured steadily since the site launched in February 2026.

The Tafsir Lab on GABLVM lets you read Quranic commentary verse by verse, in plain accessible HTML, with a keyboard or screen reader friendly layout. We released it on April 18, 2026, and refined it a few days later. This post is the proper introduction.
